Afghan intensive offender: “Prison felt like a youth hostel”.

By Kai Rebmann

This criminal record is significantly longer than the curriculum vitae of many a traffic light minister or chairman of a governing party. Abdul F., who has lived in Germany since 1997, has a total of 29 entries. However, the asylum seeker, who has been rejected several times, spent a good part of it behind bars. Now the 36-year-old Afghan was sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the district court of Reutlingen (Baden-Württemberg). It is his sixth prison sentence in total.

Abdul F. seems to have specialized in particular in burglaries and robberies recently. The public prosecutor’s office charged her regular customer with having robbed a kiosk at the train station in Reutlingen this spring, as well as with having broken into a doctor’s office in neighboring Tübingen. The Afghan admitted to the charges, explaining, “I was suffering from withdrawal symptoms and desperately needed money for drugs.”

The crime at the Reutlingen train station is particularly serious, as a saleswoman at the kiosk was also harmed. Abdul F. had tied up his victim and then stolen 1,200 euros from the store’s safe and cash register. Bild” quotes from the testimony of the 25-year-old injured party: “I was terribly afraid, at first I thought he wanted to rape me. After the act, I was in shock for days.”

'Second wife' of the father is probably to blame

After the defendant had fully confessed, it was up to the court to determine the sentence. In the Afghan’s attempt to claim mitigating circumstances from his point of view, things got really adventurous, and that in two respects.

Abdul F. did not seek the blame primarily with himself, but with the “second wife of his father” – not the second wife. This is the reason for his problems because he does not get along with her. Although it is not directly apparent from the remarks, they nevertheless suggest that the father is conducting his multiple marriage, which is actually prohibited in this country, in Germany. Because in order to not be able to get along with someone – so much so that it drives you to commit crimes – you probably have to assume a certain proximity.

At least the defendant then found some words that indicate something like his own sense of guilt. He said he wanted to apologize to “the whole society” and especially to his victim for having been a delinquent so many times. Exactly 29 convictions have accumulated over the years.

Catholic baptism prevented deportation

Abdul F. promised to begin therapy to “become (a) better person.” The court was little impressed by these protestations and pronounced a prison sentence of three and a half years. The reason given was: “Apparently, the [bisherige] detention did not impress them enough. We’re giving you another opportunity to do that.”

The judges should not have been surprised by the fact that the “full force of the German rule of law” has so far not been effective against Abdul F. The Afghan himself had stated in his plea, “Until now, I felt prison was like a youth hostel because I had no destination.” Now, however, this is different, as he now has a girlfriend waiting for him, the intensive offender believes.

So the question remains how it can be that an apparently unteachable asylum seeker with such a criminal record, who has also been rejected several times, is still in Germany at all. In the recent past – more precisely, since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan – Abdul F. benefited from the suspension of deportations to the Hindu Kush.

If one believes the files, the Afghan was indeed to be deported in 2016. Abdul F., however, had himself baptized as a Catholic and was thus apparently able to convince anyone that this alone had put him on the right path from now on.

And so the conclusion of Judge Eberhard Hausch remains, who wrote into the poetry album of the convicted man: “We don’t want to hear nice words, but to see deeds.”

Under fire – but all the more important is your support!

“Conspiracy ideologue,” “Nazi” or “right-wing agitator”: as a critical journalist today, you have to constantly have dirt thrown at you. The public broadcasters are particularly active in this area. ARD’s chief fact-finder Gensing already sued me in 2019, and the Böhmermann broadcaster ZDF recently slandered me as a “propagator of conspiracy narratives” – without naming a single piece of evidence, and in a post full of lies. Springer journalist Gabor Steingardt slandered me in “Focus,” for which I worked for 16 years, as a “member of an army of tin soldiers” and a “media fighting machine” of the AfD. On the initiative of “Westdeutscher Rundfunk,” I was even put on the wanted list. If one defends oneself legally, one usually has to bear the costs oneself. Your support is all the more important. Also morally. It spurs you on to keep going and not give up. Thank you very much for making my work possible with your contribution – without compulsory fees and tax money.
