Agitation out of retirement: Gauck offends millions of voters

“Gauck, oblivious to history, prefers to pact with perpetrator party Left/PDS/SED and wants National Front again after 1989” – with this comment an experienced colleague, now retired, sent me a link to an article in the Deutschlandfunk with the following headline: “‘From CDU to Left’ Gauck pleads for broad alliance of ‘all democratic parties’ against AfD”. For my colleague as a trained citizen of the GDR, this evokes very unpleasant memories. And fears.

The “National Front,” which until 1973 was still called the “National Front of Democratic Germany,” was an association of parties and mass organizations in the GDR. The official claim, which was as mendacious as the word “democratic” in the state’s name: It was supposed to enable all social groups to influence sociopolitical processes. The reality: it was a means of disciplining the bloc parties and mass organizations and consolidating the SED’s supremacy in the state. So an important tool of the leftist dictatorship.

Critics see the harmony of the major parties, from the “Left” to the CDU/CSU and FDP, on key issues as reminiscent of the bloc parties of the GDR. As much as an equation is forbidden, parallels cannot be dismissed out of hand: Even the CDU/CSU has castrated itself, allowing itself only supposedly “constructive criticism. In reality, however, this is nothing more than facade cosmetics for the goals of red-green policy. And the CDU/CSU and FDP have essentially adopted them. Instead of opposing the “woken” restructuring of society, they only want to slow down the pace and, at best, add other nuances.

That is why more and more people in Germany see the “Alternative for Germany” as the only alternative to the red-green all-party front. And the greater the hatred and agitation against the AfD and the exclusion – which in turn brings the party new voters.

It is no surprise that the ex-president is now joining in the big smear concert from his retirement. Legendary is his sentence: “The elites are not the problem at all, the populations are the problem at the moment”. There could be no better way to expose the aloofness in the ivory tower.

And Gauck is continuing where he started with such statements: The AfD must be given the clear signal that it will never come to power, the former pastor told Stern magazine. If the AfD were to come out ahead in eastern Germany after next year’s state elections, for example, all democratic parties would have to join forces to prevent it from governing. This applies to the CDU up to and including the Left Party, Gauck explained.

An inconceivable statement – given the past of the “left”, which never credibly distanced itself from the GDR dictatorship. And which, in order not to lose access to the assets of the Mauerschützenpartei SED, even officially declares to be legally identical with the latter.

It is significant that Gauck, just like Steinmeier & Co., apparently does not say a word about the attacks on AfD politicians and the danger to which they are exposed.

It is also unbelievable that Gauck – like so many other politicians – denies that the AfD is a democratic party. In doing so, he exposes himself as an anti-democrat. Because only an anti-democrat can call a party that was elected by millions of voters “not democratic.” The statement is also a vicious defamation of those same voters.

Gauck is thus adopting the same mindset as the Greens in Bavaria. After the election, they announced: “We invite all democratic parties to work out an emergency plan for democracy with us. In other words: If voters don’t vote what they should, democracy is in danger in the eyes of the Greens. Just like Gauck, they don’t even realize how this exposes their own hostility to democracy – and how they are standing in the intellectual tradition of the GDR.

Liberal democracy must prove itself defensible, Gauck said in the interview. Apparently, he and large parts of the political-media complex are getting the shivers in view of the uncomfortable fact that new parliaments will be elected in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg in September 2024. And that in all three countries the AfD is ahead in the polls.

Yes, liberal democracy must indeed prove itself defensible. From their enemies in sheep’s clothing – whether their names are Gauck, Faeser or Lang. Their work against democracy is particularly dangerous because they do it – in the tradition of the GDR’s thinking – under the guise of protecting democracy.

And because, especially in western Germany, many people are still too guileless about the dangers of red-green ideological policies. Whereas the East Germans, for the most part, have an “inoculation.” Their “political immune system” is trained to recognize anti-democratic authoritarian tendencies even in the camouflage of “democracy promotion.”
